What mandatory information must a Swiss invoice contain?

A valid Swiss invoice must include: full names and addresses of both issuer and recipient, invoice date, unique invoice number, detailed service description, amounts per line and total, bank details (IBAN), and — since October 2022 — a Swiss QR code. If you are VAT-registered, your VAT number and itemised tax are also required. Magic Heidi generates all of this automatically and correctly.

Do I need to issue official invoices as a babysitter, building caretaker, or pet carer?

Yes — as soon as you work independently or on a fee basis, you should issue an invoice for every service. This applies to side activities and occasional jobs too. A professional invoice protects you legally, documents your work to the client, and is important later for AHV/SVA recognition as a self-employed person.

How do I correctly show travel costs and material costs on an invoice?

Best as separate line items. For travel costs you can show a per-kilometre rate (e.g. CHF 0.70/km) or a flat travel fee. Material costs are listed individually with quantity and unit price. I'm not VAT-registered — what do I write on the invoice?

If your annual turnover is below CHF 100,000 you are generally not required to register for VAT. In that case write on your invoice: 'Exempt from VAT pursuant to Art. 10 para. 2 VATL' or simply 'No VAT (turnover below CHF 100,000)'.
