Swiss Tax Reserves for Freelancers | Magic Heidi
Build Swiss tax and AHV reserves from your profit, personal tax estimate and provisional bills. A practical workflow, not a guaranteed percentage.

Even an employee's net salary is not all disposable income: without payroll withholding tax, employees generally pay income tax themselves. Self-employed people must also plan contributions on their independent earnings, because clients do not deduct them from fees.
25–35% of profit is a hypothetical planning range, not an official Swiss guideline or a guarantee of sufficient cover. Residence, tax year, family circumstances, total income and deductions affect tax. Social contributions have a separate assessment basis. Calculate a personal estimate including other income, subtract advance payments already made and reserves already held, and update it when circumstances change. Your required percentage may lie outside this range.
Why a freelancer needs an active reserve
Employers withhold employee AHV/IV/EO contributions and add their own share. The employee and employer shares are each 5.3%. Employees may also have unemployment insurance and other deductions. Income tax is only withheld where the relevant payroll withholding rules apply; other employees still need to reserve for their tax bills. The gross-to-net calculator helps distinguish these items.
For your independent activity:
- Clients do not withhold your contributions. Report your activity and expected income to the compensation fund rather than waiting for a final bill.
- Provisional bills are estimates. Report material changes to the tax authority and compensation fund.
- Provisional and final bills differ. Dates depend on the authority and invoice. There is no nationwide two-year payment holiday.
Unpaid advances and later adjustments can accumulate depending on due dates and payments already made. Not saving a reserve is not the same as not paying contributions: two tax periods and two AHV years do not necessarily fall due together. Plan payments and reserves individually for side businesses as well as an established sole proprietorship.
Three separate calculations
1. Income tax
Estimate federal, cantonal and municipal tax, and church tax where applicable. A canton name alone is not enough for a reliable amount. Profit is not turnover, and taxable income also reflects other income and allowable deductions. See the deductions overview.
Use the official FTA tax calculator with the correct year, municipality, marital status, children, religion and taxable income. Save inputs and results. An income-tax result is not a total including AHV.
2. AHV/IV/EO and other costs
The full self-employed AHV/IV/EO rate in 2026 is 10%: 8.1% AHV, 1.4% IV and 0.5% EO. Below CHF 60,500.00 of relevant annual income, a sliding scale applies; below CHF 10,100.00 the minimum is generally CHF 530.00. Exceptions and special rules apply, including for small ancillary earnings. Administration charges and other contributions, notably family allowance fund contributions, need separate budgeting.
The compensation fund determines the assessment basis and adds personal AHV/IV/EO contributions back to reported net income. Income-tax deductions and the AHV base are not interchangeable. Source: AHV leaflet 2.02.
Self-employed activity does not attract unemployment insurance contributions or corresponding unemployment cover for lost assignments. The absence of ALV does not mean that 10% covers every social insurance cost. Budget additional protection and a lean-month liquidity buffer separately.
3. VAT
Keep VAT funding separate from your personal income-tax and AHV reserve. Under the effective method, eligible input tax offsets output VAT; under the net tax rate method it is not deducted separately. Filing arrangements and rates depend on the case. The VAT guide for freelancers covers that subject; do not simply spend collected VAT as profit.
Fictional budget model, not a cantonal tax calculation
At CHF 6,000.00 monthly profit, a purely assumed 30% reserve is CHF 1,800.00 a month or CHF 21,600.00 a year. Whether it is sufficient depends on your personal estimate. A buffer does not guarantee that no additional payment will arise.
If profit increases, review provisional bills promptly. A small first provisional invoice does not prove a small final liability. For a side business, other income can raise the marginal income-tax rate on extra profit; employment does not automatically reduce the AHV rate on every ancillary activity.
Build a reserve system you can reconcile
- Use a separate account. Label money for tax and AHV so it is not confused with living expenses.
- Derive transfers from the estimate. Spread expected annual tax and contribution liabilities over the remaining months, allowing for amounts already paid and reserves already held. A turnover percentage only works if it properly reflects costs and margins.
- Budget household spending after reserves. A large final bill is not an unexpected business expense if it has already been allowed for.
- Calendar actual due dates. Tax dates depend on canton and invoice. Self-employed AHV provisional contributions are generally quarterly and payable within ten days after quarter-end. A final balance invoice generally has a 30-day payment period. Check leaflet 2.02 and your fund's schedule.
- Choose a deliberate buffer. Allow for uncertainty in profit and deductions. No universal extra five percentage points covers every possible adjustment.
Your hourly rate must support taxes, contributions and unpaid holidays as well as operating costs. Reserving money does not fix underpricing.
If the reserve is missing
Contact the authority early about payment options. An extension or instalment agreement is not automatically interest-free. Review the income estimate and provisional bills at the same time. Depending on the applicable rules and facts, overdue amounts can lead to interest, reminders and enforcement costs. Do not assume that silence suspends a deadline or guarantees instalments.
Frequently asked questions
What percentage tax do people pay in Switzerland?
There is no single rate. Calculate using tax year, municipality, personal circumstances and taxable income. Estimate social contributions separately.
What does a freelancer pay?
Income tax depends on residence, income and deductions. The full AHV/IV/EO rate is 10% in 2026, with a sliding scale at lower incomes. Budget other charges and contributions too.
Is there one tax-free income threshold?
No nationwide threshold applies to all taxes and personal circumstances. AHV also has a minimum contribution, exceptions and special rules.
Does a salary job reduce contributions on my side business?
Not automatically. Ask the fund about small earnings and minimum contributions already paid. Add ancillary income to your overall tax estimate.
Keep the inputs current
A useful reserve starts with expected income tax, separately estimated contributions, provisional payments already made and a deliberate buffer. Review it after material changes. Organising invoices and expenses supplies inputs; it does not produce a guaranteed real-time taxable profit or automatic personal tax calculation.
